“Our greatest asset isn’t technology or venues, it’s people. The Annabelle Project ensures the next generation doesn’t just dream about success, they achieve it.”

“The Talent Time Bomb: Why Ignoring the Next Generation Threatens the Event Industry’s Future” is a contributed article from Warwick Davies.

The trade show and events industry thrive on creativity, execution and human connection. Yet while we invest heavily in attendee experience, marketing and technology, too often we neglect the people who will sustain and grow the business: our future talent. In this industry, that gap between potential and access has become a business-critical problem.

The Talent Gap: A Growing Threat

If we recruit new talent the way we attract event attendees — through broad messaging, last-minute promotions and short-term thinking — we’ll keep missing the mark. Top students are not just looking for jobs; they’re seeking purpose, mentorship and clear career pathways.

Meanwhile, other industries such as tech, consulting and entertainment are actively competing for the same pool of ambitious, creative minds. If we want to produce the best events, we must compete for the best college students.

And here’s the catch: we can’t rely on committees, task forces or Zoom calls to reach them. To truly engage emerging talent, we must see them where they are: on campus, in classrooms and in student organizations, not just behind computer screens. Face-to-face mentorship and real-world exposure are critical for inspiring students to consider a career in events.

The Annabelle Project: Building the Bridge

Founded by veteran event executive Warwick Davies, The Annabelle Project (TAP) addresses this gap through mentorship, professional guidance and direct exposure to industry events for college students, particularly those from underrepresented communities.

TAP provides a structured bridge between today’s leaders and tomorrow’s talent. By partnering with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic-serving institutions, TAP introduces students to trade shows, conferences and experiential marketing, showing that this industry is not just viable — it’s vibrant, rewarding and full of opportunity.

Vision, Courage and Perseverance: The TAP Model

Vision: Students often haven’t seen anyone like themselves in industry roles. Mentorship and exposure help them see the path clearly, making goals feel achievable.

Courage: Relationship-driven industries can be intimidating. TAP mentors help students take confident first steps into internships, interviews and entry-level positions.

Perseverance: Success takes time. TAP mentors stay connected over months and years, guiding students through setbacks and celebrating wins and helping them build resilience that will serve them throughout their careers.

The Business Case for Industry Investment

Talent is the foundation of every great show. Creativity, execution and innovation are impossible without skilled professionals. TAP is not charity; it’s strategic workforce development:

  • Early access to top talent ensures companies can hire the best and brightest.
  • Sustained mentorship increases retention and prepares students for leadership roles.
  • In-person engagement on campus helps build authentic relationships and sparks real interest in the industry.
  • Diversity of thought drives innovation, improving event design, attendee engagement and ROI.

Every contribution time, funding or access helps a student:

  • See the path ahead with clarity
  • Take bold career steps
  • Build resilience to succeed in a dynamic industry

Turning Dreams into Industry Sustainability

The Annabelle Project isn’t just helping students: it’s safeguarding the future of the events industry. Companies that invest in talent now will not only strengthen their workforce, but they will also secure their competitive advantage for years to come.

Investing in mentorship and early talent pipelines isn’t charity it’s smart business strategy. The next generation of event leaders is out there. The question is: will we meet them where they are, or will other industries beat us to it?

How to Get Involved:

  • Mentor a student
  • Sponsor participation or events
  • Connect TAP to universities or HR programs
