New York, NY – Sally Shankland, outgoing CEO of UBM Americas, will join publishing giant McGraw-Hill at the end of June. Shankland, who announced her resignation from UBM after 28 years in the exhibitions industry, will take over as president of the Higher Education Group at McGraw-Hil Education on June 29. Shankland’s replacement at UBM has not been announced, although the company said an internal candidate would be selected before Shankland’s departure.
The McGraw-Hill job will keep Shankland in New York City. McGraw-Hill Education has been reorganizing its leadership team as part of a strategic shift from publishing to a “learning science company” that emphasizes personalized experiences for students, educators and education professionals.
Shankland was named the first CEO of the newly formed UBM Americas division last Fall. She was featured on the cover of Trade Show Executive in April 2015 and was the interviewee for the “Power Lunch” column in the same issue.
Shankland broke into the industry with Miller Freeman in 1984 and joined CMP Healthcare Media in 1996. She moved to UBM in 2007 as CEO of UBM Medica and was named CEO of UBM Connect in 2012. Along the way, she served as a member of the board of directors of the Society of Independent Show Organizers.
UBM Americas was formed through the consolidation of UBM’s operations in South America and North America. Specifically, the UBM Brazil unit was joined with UBM Tech and UBM Connect with Shankland, who had been CEO of UBM Connect, at the helm.
Her brief tenure at UBM Americas was an eventful one as the London-based media company reorganized and set course on a strategy emphasizing its ample worldwide trade show and events business. A key move was the blockbuster acquisition of Advanstar Communications, Inc., the organizers of MAGIC Market.
