Penton Media Reorganizes: Linder to Lead Trade Shows and Denny Moves Up to Chief Revenue Officer

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

New York, NY — Penton Media announced a reorganization plan on December 21 that placed the company’s trade show operations into an expanded product group headed by its New Hope Media division.

New Hope’s president, Fred Linder, was promoted to senior vice president and took the helm of a group that includes all Penton events and exhibitions. Colorado-based New Hope has been focused on shows serving the booming market for organic food and other natural products. Its portfolio includes the Natural Foods Expo franchise and The Organic Summit.

The management of Penton’s wide range of events will be consolidated under Alan Peterson, the current head of New Hope Events. His expanded responsibilities include show management, operations, sales, marketing and registration.

On December 14, Margaret Pederson announced her intention to step down in April 2008 as president of Penton Exhibition Group. She will assist in the transition along with New Hope Executive Vice President Scott Owen.

French also announced that Darrell Denny had been promoted to the position of Chief Revenue Officer for Penton Media. Denny had been executive vice president of the Lifestyle Media Group and will have oversight over all revenue-generating initiatives. All product group heads will have a dotted-line reporting relationship to Darrell.

Other moves announced at Penton included the promotion of Dan Bagan to senior vice president in charge of the new Agricultural & Food Group and Kim Paulsen’s promotion to the new Technology Media Group. Penton’s New Media Group will be expanded as will the Transportation, Aviation and Information Data Products Group, and Financial Services, Marketing Media and Custom Group.

A Hybrid Organization

The reorganization comes nearly a year after Penton and Prism joined forces. French said the moves were designed to streamline operations and better position the company’s franchises and management talent. Penton was formerly organized by industry group, and Prism, was essentially run by functional groups (print, events, web). With the reorganization,  Penton becomes a hybrid company with a little of both organizational structures.
