CHICAGO The Experiential Design and Producers Association (EDPA), Exhibition Services & Contractors Association (ESCA) and Events Industry Council (EIC) have joined forces on comprehensive guidance for sustainable exhibition stand construction.

Waste reduction, energy conservation, responsible sourcing, and community engagement that align with the EIC Sustainable Event Standards are addressed. The Guidance for Sustainable Exhibition Stand Construction (GSESC) ensures that EDPA, ESCA and EIC member organizations have clear and actionable guidance to reduce environmental impact and promote responsible practices.

“The events industry has historically been responsible for large quantities of waste to landfills and having significant carbon footprint. In the current climate, sustainable business conduct is paramount for long-term success and the preservation of the exhibitions industry,” Jim Obermeyer, Chair of EDPA’s Sustainability Committee and Regional Vice President of Bray Leino Events, said.

The new guidance, which will be made widely available in the industry, will also be added as a supporting resource for the EIC Sustainable Event Standards. The EIC Standards are a group of eight standards that assess suppliers and events on a range of criteria relating to environmental and social responsibility. They serve as a framework for collaboration and provide a strong emphasis on metrics and guidance so that no matter what stage a professional is at on their sustainability journey, they have the support and guidance needed to measure and implement more eco-friendly practices.

“At ESCA, we understand the pivotal role that events play in shaping experiences and creating lasting impressions,” Julie Kagy, CEM, Executive Director of ESCA, said. “It is our collective responsibility to ensure that these experiences are not at the cost of our planet. Through this sustainability guidance, we envision a future where events thrive harmoniously with our environment.”

Kagy adds that this guidance represents a pivotal shift towards environmental stewardship within the trade show industry. “This initiative underscores a collective commitment to sustainability, encouraging industry leaders to adopt eco-friendly practices and materials. It’s a call to action that aligns with the broader movement towards reducing carbon footprints and promoting sustainable development across global industries. The future of the trade show industry lies in our ability to innovate and implement practices that not only enhance the exhibitor and attendee experience but also protect the planet. By setting a standard for sustainability, we are paving the way for a greener, more responsible industry that contributors attendees, and future generations can benefit from and be proud of,” Kagy said.
