Hugh Jones Named CEO of Reed Exhibitions as Chet Burchett Retires

LONDON – Reed Exhibitions, a division of U.K.-based public company RELX, named Hugh Jones as CEO, effective February 1. Jones, who joined RELX in 2011 when it acquired Accuity, succeeds Chet Burchett, who is retiring and returning to Texas after five years at the helm. Most recently, Jones served as the Global Managing Director for Accuity, Cirium, Estates Gazette (EG) and ICIS — all part of Risk & Business Analytics, a division of RELX.

“I’m looking forward to bringing more increasingly sophisticated data-led analytics and technology to more customers around the world,” said Jones, who will report to RELX CEO Erik Engstrom. “Exhibitions is an exciting, entrepreneurial industry, and the fundamentals of the business are excellent. Combining the best of face-to-face connections with technology and rich data analytics will provide new value to our more than 7 million exhibitors and visitors.  This ensures that their investment of time and resources into our exhibitions becomes even more valuable, efficient and relevant to their individual needs, ensuring that they grow their business.”

As Global Managing Director for RELX, Jones led the company’s M&A activities, including completing and integrating more than five transactions in the past five years. With a BA in Economics from Yale University and an MBA from the University of Michigan, Jones has been responsible for overseeing offices in over 17 countries, thousands of employees, and over 30,000 customers on behalf of the RELX group.

Burchett, a 15-year veteran of Reed Exhibitions, will serve as non-executive Chairman through 2020, focusing on special projects and providing transitional support to Jones.  After serving for 11 years as CEO of Reed Exhibitions Americas, Burchett was promoted to CEO of Reed Exhibitions in January 2015. During Burchett’s tenure as CEO, Reed Exhibitions grew underlying revenues each year from 2015 to 2018, according to the most recent financial report (full year 2019 data is not yet published). As of Oct. 31, 2019, Reed Exhibition reported underlying revenue growth year to date of 6%.
