CHICAGO — Growing your LinkedIn presence can help you build your network, find opportunities and gain recognition. For up-and-comers, though, crafting the perfect post can seem intimidating.
Yvette Campbell, CMP, Global Meeting Broker – Hotel & Venue Sourcing at Meetings Made Easy, sat down with Trade Show Executive’s Young Professionals Corner to share tips and tricks for using LinkedIn to strengthen your personal brand.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Campbell started using LinkedIn as a platform to connect.
“Professionally, posting on LinkedIn is a way for me to share destinations I’m experiencing or learning about,” Campbell explained. “I use it as an informational area for my followers. I love using LinkedIn to announce events I am attending. This opens doors for hoteliers, CVB’s and GSO’s to reach out and connect with me prior to getting to the city. LinkedIn can open doors if you allow it to do so.”
Here are tips from Campbell for professionals who want to level up their LinkedIn game:

- It takes time, but consistency is key. Be consistent with your posts.
- If you’re not willing to receive some criticism, feedback or opinions, don’t participate.
- Do not wait until you think the post is perfect. When you have an idea to share, just do it.
- Make a point of commenting on other connections’ posts and not just clicking on the like button. Your following will grow faster and your connections will be more authentic.
- Having people follow you is not always an accurate number of people who actually read your posts. If you want to grow your following, you must continue to engage on multiple posts.
- Be yourself — Not every post has to be work-related.
- Know your audience.

Do’s and Don’ts from Yvette Campbell:
Do’s:
- Always write a response to someone who comments on your post.
- Use the LinkedIn URL to connect with everyone you meet — make sure you connect and don’t just hit follow.
- Always interact with posts, because clicking the like button gives no feedback. Always try to write something on posts you like.
Dont’s:
- Never be disrespectful on posts. Never directly attack anyone’s opinion, be neutral (sending a private note if you like and discussing situations is acceptable).
- Don’t ignore when people comment on your posts, always answer.
