Emerald Acquires CEDIA Home Technology Show

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

San Juan Capistrano, Calif. – Emerald Expositions, LLC has acquired CEDIA Expo, a Trade Show Executive (TSE) Gold 100 show that specializes in the growing field of home technology.

Terms of the sale were not announced nor were any immediate plans that Emerald might have for the event. “I am confident that the combination of Emerald’s deep experience, capabilities and unrivaled scale in operating trade shows, together with CEDIA’s clear vision, market affinity and pre-eminent educational content, will propel the show forward for the benefit of the entire industry,” said Emerald CEO David Loechner.

CEDIA Expo 2017 takes place September 5-9 at the San Diego Convention Center with attendance projected at around 18,000.

The 2016 edition of CEDIA Expo was held in Dallas and drew 18,752 attendees. The metrics for the show were mainly flat compared to the 2015 show, which was ranked No. 88 on the most-recent Gold 100 at 234,082 net square feet (nsf). Exhibit space in Dallas declined (0.9)% to 232,014 nsf. The number of exhibitors slipped (1.6)% to 502, including about 100 first-time participants. Attendance was up 0.3%

The Custom Electronics Design & Installation Association (CEDIA) said in the announcement that turning the show over to Emerald would free up its resources to reallocate staff to programs and initiatives that will drive member success.

Emerald CFO Phil Evans said CEDIA’s current show staff would remain with the show for at least this year. “The association staff will continue to support the show through the next event in September and we will be working during that time to determine whether it would make sense for any of the CEDIA association team to join Emerald,” he told TSE.

Emerald added CEDIA to its Design & Construction portfolio led by Executive Vice President Joe Randall and Brian Pagel. Pagel, who was recently promoted to Senior Vice President, also oversees the National Pavement Expo and the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show (KBIS), another Gold 100 show.

“Brian has shown great leadership in the turnaround of KBIS,” Randall said in Emerald’s internal announcement. “Adding CEDIA Expo, along with the recently acquired National Pavement Expo, to his portfolio gives Brian and his team the opportunity to apply their considerable experience, skills and commitment to these new Emerald brands.”

CEDIA Expo will also overlap with Emerald’s Technology portfolio, which is under Randall’s guidance and includes Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition and RFID Journal Live!
