UBM Acquires Brazilian Healthcare Show Hospitalar; Plans Expansion

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

Sao Paulo, Brazil – Hospitalar, one of the largest healthcare trade shows in Latin America, has been acquired by expansion-minded UBM from SPFC Group for an undisclosed sum. The show, which drew 1,250 exhibitors and around 95,000 attendees to its May 19-22, 2015 edition in Sao Paulo, generated £6.6 million pounds ($10.1 million) in revenue this year, UBM said.

Tim Cobbold, CEO of UBM, said Hospitalar was riding a wave of growth in the Brazilian middle class, which was in turn fueling growth in the private healthcare sector that the newly acquired show serves. “It is a ‘must-attend’ show with an increasingly international customer base and will further strengthen our position in Brazil,” he said.

Hospitalar is the sixth show in UBM’s Brazil portfolio and will serve as a base for the company’s expansion into South America’s healthcare market. “We are excited about the opportunity to leverage UBM’s strong position in the medical device and manufacturing sector,” said Cobbold. “We are already planning to co-locate an MD&M show alongside Hospitalar in 2016.”

The Hospitalar staff from SPFC Group will join UBM as part of the deal. The SPFC upper management team will remain with the show for two years in a non-executive capacity.
