CHICAGO — Midsized convention centers featuring prime exhibit space between 125,000 square feet (sf) and 349,999 sf are available in 36 U.S. states as well as Puerto Rico. These venues provide show organizers with diverse options for show location as well as the opportunity to host events for key regional customers.
Midsized centers factor heavily in Trade Show Executive’s World’s Top Convention Centers (WTCC) directory. There are 98 midsized convention centers in North America, which account for 32.8% of all the venues tracked. México contains North America’s largest midsized venue, which is Expo Santa Fe México in Mexico City. With 348,750 sf of prime exhibit space, this center is larger than Oregon’s Portland Expo Center (333,000 sf) and British Columbia’s Vancouver Convention Centre (311,500 sf), the largest midsized facilities in the U.S. and Canada.
Several midsized facilities have expansions planned in the coming years. The Baird Center in Milwaukee will conclude its expansion in May of 2024. The center will increase the prime exhibit space offered to 300,000 sf, its meeting space to 111,500 sf and raise its flex space to 69,500 sf. Also in the Spring of 2024, the Savannah Convention Center in Georgia plans to wrap up its expansion, which will essentially double the rentable space offered by the venue.
Alberta’s BMO Centre at Stampede Park in Calgary will complete its construction in June 2024. The facility is expanding to 350,000 sf of prime exhibit space and 80,000 sf of meeting space while adding 50,000 sf of flex space. In July 2024, the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland intends to finish its development, featuring meeting space growth to 151,000 sf and 100,000 sf of new flex space.
Looking ahead to 2025, the National Western Complex in Denver is improving its campus with new event space and more, adding amenities such as a livestock center, an equestrian center, a hotel and a parking garage. Altogether, the facility will feature over 2.2 million sf of indoor and outdoor space. The World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Fla. is adding 80,000 sf of meeting space in 2025, as well as a new hotel which will open in Q2 2024.
