GABRIELLE WEISS, VICE PRESIDENT & EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Las Vegas—SWAT teams descended on Route 91 Harvest, an outdoor country music festival that took place near the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, after a gunman opened fire on Sunday night. More than 50 were killed, and over 400 are reported injured, making this incident the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reported that “one gunman was down” and did not believe there were any other active gunmen. The gunman, Stephen Paddock, was shot and killed on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

Reports of the shooting first emerged shortly after 10 p.m. at the music festival. Flights at McCarran International Airport were diverted amidst police activity. Roads were shut down immediately, and nearby hotels and resorts went on lockdown as police secured the area.

“A tragic and heinous act of violence has shaken the Nevada family, ” said Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval. “Our prayers are with the victims and all affected by this act of cowardice.”

According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, more than 42 million people visited the city in 2016. More than 21,000 conventions are held there annually. In 2016, more than 6.3 million convention delegates visited Las Vegas, and the county generated $9.7 billion in gaming revenue.

The FBI will assist LVPD in the investigation.
