Sustainable by Design: Six Trends Reshaping the Trade Show Industry

DENVER — The 2025 State of the Sustainable Events Industry report from Honeycomb Strategies paints a clear picture: sustainability is no longer a niche priority — it’s becoming a defining standard in the trade show industry.

Six major trends are reshaping how the industry approaches its environmental and social responsibilities, and together, they signal a future where every phase of event execution is evaluated through a sustainability lens.

“What we’re seeing on the ground, working hand in hand with our clients in the event industry, is that the value of sustainable innovation outpaces the risks,” Lindsay Arell, CEO of Honeycomb Strategies, said. “Organizations are aligning their ethos with those of their stakeholders to make creative changes to their programming and planning that incorporate social wellness and environmental responsibility. With so many factors affecting sustainable outcomes, it’s more important than ever to be strategic in action planning and goal-setting, and that’s where we’re seeing the real impact of strong and accurate data management supporting the ability to reach those targets.”

One of the most ambitious developments is the growing push toward net-zero or carbon-negative operations. Organizers are integrating renewable energy sources, offsetting unavoidable emissions and prioritizing low-emission transportation options.

Many are aligning with the Net Zero Carbon Events Initiative, but political pushback, budgetary constraints and ongoing skepticism about the credibility of carbon offsets underscore the need for transparency and deeper local engagement.

Waste reduction is also evolving into a more systemic effort through circular design principles. Venues and organizers are moving away from single-use materials in favor of reusable, recyclable or compostable alternatives, with event designs optimized from the outset to minimize waste. While costs and gaps in local waste infrastructure remain hurdles, early sourcing and targeted industry education are helping close the gap.

Attendee demographics are also playing a role in accelerating change. Millennials and Gen Z — now the largest attendee groups — expect visible, authentic commitments to sustainability and social impact.

For these audiences, greenwashing or token gestures simply won’t cut it and events that fail to meet these expectations risk losing both trust and engagement.

On the technology front, more organizers are adopting advanced data dashboards and digital management platforms to track environmental metrics and bolster transparency.

These tools support accountability and more informed decision-making, though their adoption can be slowed by high initial costs and cybersecurity concerns. Experts recommend starting with pilot programs and ensuring staff receive proper training to maximize impact.

The shift to digital communication continues to gain momentum, replacing paper with mobile apps, QR codes and digital signage. For situations where print remains necessary, Forest-Stewardship-Council-certified materials and reusable designs are becoming the norm. The challenge lies in balancing sustainability with brand presentation and ensuring that all audience segments remain engaged, including those less comfortable with digital-only approaches.

Finally, supply chain accountability is under greater scrutiny than ever. Event organizers face mounting pressure to ensure that suppliers and vendors uphold strong environmental and human rights standards. As a result, tools for traceability, best practices in supply chain management and clear onboarding protocols are becoming vital in protecting against reputational risks.

Together, these developments reflect a broader transformation: sustainability is no longer a “nice-to-have,” but a business imperative. The combination of generational expectations, advancing technology and global climate pressures is pushing events toward more responsible, transparent, and impactful practices.

As Honeycomb Strategies’ report makes clear, the industry’s leaders will be those who embed sustainability not as an add-on, but as the foundation of their events from concept to execution.
