SMG’s Savor Unit to Manage McCormick Place Food Service

Chicago, IL -The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) named Savor, a division of SMG, to be the new food service manager for McCormick Place effective September 1.  Savor was selected from among four providers vying for the five-year contract based on criteria that included its marketing, operations and sustainability plans. “Savor will deliver a superior level of service in an environmentally responsible manner at a price that is competitive with our competitors in the convention center industry,” said MPEA Trustee Jim Reilly.

Opening the door to a new food provider was part of the 2010 overhaul of operations at McCormick Place aimed at making the facility more user friendly and competitive with other major U.S. convention venues. The sheer size of McCormick Place and relatively isolated location mean in-house concession stands are the most practical place for exhibitors and attendees to grab what they hope will be a quick bite.

The MPEA said it expected Savor to upgrade the food-service infrastructure and equipment at McCormick Place while maintaining competitive prices. “Savor presented an exciting approach that will translate into enhanced dining options for our customers,” Reilly said.

Another part of the McCormick Place reforms was bringing SMG in as the overall manager of the facility. SMG President & CEO Wes Westley said that having a food-service provider that is a direct part of the management company would be an asset. “We have had great successes in other major markets where SMG provides a combined management approach and look forward to bringing those experiences to Chicago,” he said.
