Massachusetts Port Authority and Omni Hotels & Resorts Sign Deal for Convention Center Hotel

Boston – A $550 million full-service hotel with 1,054 guest rooms and 120,000 sf of meeting and event space is officially in the works. Dallas-based Omni Hotels & Resorts last week finalized a deal with the Massachusetts Port Authority to build the full-service hotel on a 2-acre parcel across the street from the Boston Convention & Exposition Center (BCEC).

Construction is expected to begin next year and be completed by early 2021. The meeting and event space will include three ballrooms. The hotel will add room options for customers of both the BCEC and the nearby Hynes Convention Center.

Omni Hotels & Resorts also operates the Omni Parker House luxury historic hotel in downtown Boston near Beacon Hill and Logan International Airport.

David Gibbons, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, called the plans “a tremendous asset for our customers as we compete to bring events to Boston from around the world.”

Last summer, Gibbons told the Boston Globe that he would not reconsider an expansion plan for the convention center until there were more hotel rooms in South Boston. At that time, the city ranked last among its peers for hotel rooms within walking distance of the convention center, which results in additional costs for organizers needing to arrange shuttles between hotels and the convention center.
