“The trade show can’t be a one-off experience anymore. It has to become part of a 365-day marketing strategy.”

HILLSBOROUGH, NJ — Badge scans. Booth traffic. Business cards. For decades, those metrics defined trade show success. Today, they’re no longer enough.

That shift reflects changing attendee expectations. According to Freeman research, attendees rank hands-on, interactive experiences as their preferred way to engage with exhibitors.

“The trade show can’t be a one-off experience anymore,” Joe Cascio, Director of Business Development at F2B Services, said. “It has to become part of a 365-day marketing strategy.”

As attendee expectations evolve, exhibitors are rethinking not only how booths are designed but also how success is measured. Beyond counting badge scans, many now measure dwell time, participation, product interest and whether interactions lead to qualified business conversations.

The modern exhibit is becoming less about showcasing products and more about inviting attendees to experience them.

Interactive activations, gamification, immersive LED environments and hands-on demonstrations encourage visitors to spend more time in the booth and generate data exhibitors can use long after the show.

“Technology is just the vessel,” Thomas Pappalardo, Founder of F2B Services, said. “What we’re really creating are experiences that help brands connect with people.”

That philosophy was recently put into practice at Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s HPE Discover conference, where F2B Services created more than 40 interactive experiences and seven large-scale LED environments as part of a nearly $1 million exhibit program.

Rather than relying on traditional product displays, HPE organized the exhibit into seven gamified engagement zones where attendees completed hands-on challenges while exploring different technology solutions. The format encouraged visitors to spend more time in the space, discover multiple product categories, and create more opportunities for meaningful conversations with booth staff.

“At the HPE Discover events in the U.S. and Europe, we create a seven-acre technology showcase featuring our latest innovations,” said Kate Cashin, Strategic Event Manager at Hewlett Packard Enterprise. “F2B Services is a valued partner, combining industry-leading LED display solutions with exceptional expertise and dependable execution.”

This led to stronger engagement and increased organic social sharing, extending HPE’s presence beyond the show floor.

“If you aren’t designing for participation,” Cascio said, “you’re designing for irrelevance.”

Exhibitors are also redefining ROI. Beyond booth traffic, they’re evaluating participation rates, product engagement, lead quality, and how interactions translate into qualified sales conversations and post-show opportunities.

As exhibitors seek greater accountability for every marketing dollar, the industry’s focus continues to shift from building the biggest booth to creating the most meaningful interactions.

As exhibitors face increasing pressure to justify every marketing dollar, the industry’s competitive advantage may no longer be the biggest booth — but the one that creates the most meaningful interactions.
