NEW YORK — The powerhouse fashion industry show duo of COTERIE and MAGIC, produced by Informa Markets, attracted more than 1,000 exhibitors to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center — COTERIE with more than 800, and MAGIC with more than 300.

The biannual COTERIE New York, the leading industry event for the women’s contemporary and advanced contemporary market, concluded its three-day event on Feb. 23. Overall, the show saw a 10% increase of on-site buyers from many of the most prestigious retailers, including Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, Bloomingdales and Saks Fifth Avenue, along with KITH, Anthropologie, Fenwick and others. More than 30% of the exhibiting brands came from outside of the United States.

“The increase in buyers on the show floor can be attributed to several things,” Courtney Bradarich, Vice President of COTERIE, said. “First, COTERIE’s continued evolution can be seen throughout the show, from our new branding to our new merchandising layout to the growing roster of influential and key brands in the women’s contemporary and advanced contemporary space. This season we hosted the likes of Simon Miller, Jennifer Fisher Jewelry, Honor the Gift and Reike Nen, all heavy hitters in the women’s contemporary market. COTERIE also provides access to many brands that buyers can only find at COTERIE in the U.S. Lastly, in-person events are no longer affected by travel restrictions both domestic and internationally.”

COTERIE is known for its Verified Sustainable program, a vetting process that allows buyers to easily identify sustainable brands, and this year saw a 20% increase in certified brands attendance. Two expert panel sessions focused on the environmental impact of the industry, and a Sustainability and Technology panel featured Teodora Nicolae, Vice President of Marketing at Informa Markets Fashion, along with Valentino Vettorri, Founder of Arcadia Earth and Ricardo Pasarín Lainez, Co-Founder of Lyceum VR, discussing innovative ways brands are cutting back on waste by using the latest technology.

We strive to plan at least six months ahead and are finding that brands are more comfortable committing in advance, so we started offering multi-show contracts with incentives to those who commit to early,” Bradarich said.

Another show highlight was GALLERY, a new intentionally merchandised space on the show floor highlighting new-to-show and of-the-moment designers — names like Dal the Label and Jason Wu Handbags. Strategically positioned next to GALLERY was EDIT, with established contemporary brands ranging from Woolrich to Momoni to Liviana Conti.

“COTERIE is known to be home to the classic long-trend pieces that specific buyers are looking for, and our community of unique brands bring to the show floor,” Bradarich said. “Our aim is to continue to expand and enhance this show with elevated curation and quality craftsmanship that the industry is keen to discover.”

Held concurrently, MAGIC New York is the premier wholesale fashion event for modern sportswear, young contemporary and trend-driven fashion, with 80 brands exclusively exhibiting in New York. Among the popular established brands on display were Betsey Johnson, Chinese Laundry and Eileen Fisher. More than 100 new-to-show brands included Barefoot Dreams, MIA Shoes, Bebe and Sundays Soho.

The next MAGIC shows will take place at the Music City Center in Nashville April 27-28, 2023, and Las Vegas Convention Center Aug. 7-9, 2023.
