gamescom Grows and Enhances Impact in 2026

ANDREW WARRICK, SENIOR DIGITAL EDITOR
Stand: SK Gaming, Halle 8

COLOGNE, Germany — On Aug. 26-30, 2026, gamescom, the world’s biggest video game event, took over the Koelnmesse exhibition center.

For 368,000 visitors — a 6% increase from last year — the show, which is organized by Koelnmesse GmbH and game – The German Games Industry Association, offered sneak previews of upcoming releases, awarded games that stood out from the pack and even hosted a cosplay contest.

gamescom also featured 1,473 exhibitors, an 11% increase from 2025, across 2,508,688 square feet of fully booked exhibition space.

“Our strategy is to strengthen both sides of gamescom at the same time: its value as an international business platform and its relevance as an event for fans and communities,” Tim Endres, Director gamescom at Koelnmesse GmbH, said. “For exhibitors, gamescom combines access to consumers, media, content creators, industry professionals and decision-makers. For visitors, we continue to broaden the range of companies, games, formats and communities represented at the event.”

gamescom continuously improves the experience for visitors, exhibitors and partners.

Stefan Heikhaus, Director gamescom & Events at game – The German Games Industry Association, explained that gamescom’s growth is not simply about size: It continuously improves the experience for visitors, exhibitors and partners.

gamescom responds carefully to changing demand, developments across the industry and stakeholder feedback, and looks closely at areas such as hall planning, visitor flows, services and the event’s overall structure, adapting when necessary.

“Part of the story of that sustainable growth is everything we do digitally — expanding our flagship show gamescom Opening Night Live, making the gamescom studio content more accessible with adapted content in Mandarin and Japanese, and building new platforms,” Heikhaus said.

The show’s digital program generated more than 624 million views worldwide this year.

Enhanced Value and Impact

The first European Games Done Quick (GDQ) event was held at gamescom 2026.

gamescom integrated gamescom dev, its conference for game developers, more closely into the overall event.

The gamescom business ticket combined access to gamescom dev with gamescom’s three business days and online B2B platform gamescom biz, making it easier for professionals to combine conference content, meetings and networking throughout the week.

The event also further developed the gamescom awesome indies show, giving emerging studios international exposure to help new ideas reach a global audience.

“At the same time, the future of games is not defined by technology and business alone,” Heikhaus said. “Their cultural, economic and social impact is becoming increasingly important. This was underscored by the visit of Germany’s Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was the first German head of state to attend gamescom. The gamescom congress, which he opened, addressed the potential of games beyond gaming itself.”

Along these same lines, one of the biggest additions this year was the first European Games Done Quick (GDQ) event. GDQ organizes charity speedrun events, where a player tries to end a game under certain conditions as quickly as possible.

“gamescom GDQ brought the international speedrunning community together in Cologne for three days of live runs, entertainment and fundraising,” Endres said. “The event combined gaming with a strong charity focus, giving visitors the opportunity to experience speedrunning live while supporting a good cause in the form of Gaming for Democracy. The initiative supports pro-democratic values and activities in games culture. The program was also streamed worldwide, connecting the on-site community with GDQ fans around the globe.”

Another important focus was accessibility and the overall on-site experience.

The show expanded its Accessibility Guidelines for exhibitors, added more detailed accessibility information to its on-site locator, increased the number of reservable wheelchairs and further developed its awareness and safe-space services.

“The most important takeaway from gamescom 2026 is not growth alone, but what that growth represents,” Endres added. “gamescom has become more international than ever and digitally connected while preserving the breadth that makes it distinctive. It is where business, innovation, culture and community come together. That ability to connect the entire games ecosystem, both in Cologne and globally, is what continues to drive gamescom forward.”
