Former Hotel Executive Jim Evans to Head Travel Promotion Organization

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

Washington, DC – Jim Evans, former president and CEO of Best Western International, was named CEO of the Corporation for Travel Promotion, the industry-led not-for-profit organization established by the U.S. Travel Promotion Act to boost international travel to the U.S.

Evans will be formally introduced to industry leaders May 21-25 at the U.S. Travel Association’s International Pow-Wow in San Francisco.

The International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) endorsed Evans, who has had no direct experience in the trade show industry but was previously a senior vice president of marketing for Hyatt Hotels. “I am excited about Jim’s appointment and believe his background and leadership for this important initiative is exactly what we need,” said IAEE President Steven Hacker. Addressing members of the industry and media last week, Hacker reinforced the shared values and opinions of the positive, global impact of face-to-face events, and he expressed concerns about the barriers buyers and sellers around the world. “Now, with the appointment of Evans, industry leaders can communicate issues their constituencies are facing and move forward to resolve remaining barriers to success,” he said.
The Corporation for Travel Promotion will spearhead a marketing drive to attract more tourists and business travelers to the U.S. The organization’s budget is projected as high as $200 million with half of it coming from industry but none of it from the taxpayers.
