Egypt Turmoil Derails Cairo Trade Shows

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

Cairo, Egypt – The trade show calendar in Cairo was up in the air in mid-February with two confirmed cancellations and little in the way of new information on other scheduled exhibitions.

The organizers of two February exhibitions at the Cairo International Conference Centre (CICC) told Trade Show Executive (TSE) they had officially called off their events with new dates still pending.

“As matters seem to be on their way for settlement in Egypt, the date will soon be determined after coordination with the relevant authorities and the Cairo International Conference Centre for available dates,” Ossama Kamal said in an e-mail to TSE. Kamal is chairman of Cairo ICT and Cairo MET.

EIN Trading & International Faires, the organizers of Aquatherm – Egypt Pool notified their exhibitors and attendees that the February 13-15 show at the CICC would not take place either due to “the current political circumstances in Egypt.”

The CICC itself did not provide any updates on its status. The facility, which measures 58,000 square meters (624,306 square feet) overall, is located in Nasr City, between downtown Cairo and Cairo International Airport, well away from the focal point of the demonstrations.

There was no word on the status of the  Cairo International Fair (CIF), a consumer and regional trade show held over 20 days in March. The show traditionally draws around two million visitors and occupies 40,000 gross square meters (430,566 square feet) of exhibit space.
