Diversified Communication Acquires Britain’s Digital Construction Week

HIL ANDERSON, SENIOR EDITOR

PORTLAND, Maine — Diversified Communications expanded its presence in the construction sector and the growing field of geospatial modeling and mapping by acquiring Digital Construction Week (DWC), an up-and-coming technology exhibition held in London each fall.

Diversified will bring the show, along with co-founders Luke Collings and Oliver Hughes and the rest of the current management team, into its UK division, which has tripled in size in the past three years. “We are excited to provide the additional resources and support that will allow the team to continue to expand the event to further support the professionals and businesses within this growing and evolving industry,” said the division’s Managing Director, Carsten Holm.

Digital Construction Week launched in 2015 to introduce the nuts-and-bolts construction industry to innovative new high-tech equipment and processes. The 2018 show, held Oct. 16-17 at ExCel, featured a crowd of 6,500 attendees, double the 2017 attendance, and exhibit space of around 2,000 net square meters (21,523 net square feet).

Diversified was particularly attracted to the show’s growing prowess within the geospatial mapping niche, an increasingly critical tool for large-scale construction managers. Diversified organizes GEO Business, a show for the geospatial market held at the Business Design Centre in London. GEO Business has been on a roll of its own. The May 22-23, 2018 show saw its exhibit space grow 17% over 2017 and its crowd increase to more than 2,600. Diversified said 70% of the 200 exhibitors had renewed their booth space for 2019 within three months of the show’s close.

“Our GEO Business team had been aware of DCW since they launched and has followed their rapid growth with great interest and admiration,” Oakley Dyer, Corporate Vice President – Strategy & Corporate Development, told Trade Show Executive. “Given the strategic fit with both our U.K. geospatial event and our global construction portfolio, we were eager to acquire the event when the time was right.”

Along with the expanding metrics, Digital Construction Week also appeared to be an attractive fit with Diversified’s current Building & Construction portfolio, which consists of two trade shows: AEC NEXT Technology Expo & Conference held in Anaheim, and DesignBUILD in Australia. The worldwide Diversified Technology portfolio features exhibitions on 3D design and drones as well as the geospatial arena.

“DCW has some overlap with our GEO Business show in the UK, which focuses on all things geospatial, including construction,” said Dyer. “The shows are great complements and are also a great strategic fit with AEC Next and SPAR 3D Expo & Conference, our U.S. events in the construction technology and geospatial space.”
