Atlanta — John Portman, the prominent architect who led the development of AmericasMart Atlanta, died Dec. 29 at age 93.

Portman is the father of current AmericasMart Vice Chairman, President and Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Portman. A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined. In the meantime, the Portman family requested that contributions be made to the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University.

AmericasMart originally opened in 1957 at a time when downtown Atlanta was rapidly losing residents and businesses. The converted office building was replaced in 1962 and included the first two racially integrated restaurants in downtown Atlanta, according to an AmericasMart news release.

AmericasMart Atlanta provides permanent showrooms and temporary exhibit space in downtown Atlanta for a calendar of market events for apparel, home furnishings and gift sectors. The 7-million-square-foot (sf) building includes the Atlanta Convention Center at AmericasMart, which provides 502,000 sf of prime exhibit space, according to the Trade Show Executive World’s Top Convention Centers roster.

Portman’s accomplishments also include the development of Peachtree Center, the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, and the Westin Peachtree Plaza. Outside Atlanta, Portman led the construction of Detroit’s Renaissance Center, the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles, China’s Shanghai Centre and Marina Square in Singapore.
